First Year Students - Data Science - 2023/2024

After a quick discussion with the professors I realized that there is the need for some clarifications. This message is for those of you (mainly foreigners, I must unfortunately say) who have not understood what it means to attend a master's program in a prestigious university like Federico II. You may have been misled by the fact that you pay little registration fee and think that this is a third rank or an online university. Well, it is not. UNINA is among the top three universities in Italy and among the best in Europe. A low fee is only due to the decision of the Italian government to open our outstanding universities to other countries. Our standards are very high and a master obtained at UNINA is a seal of quality which opens a lot of opportunities to our students. This is why we cannot tolerate what is happening. These standards require a complete dedication of the students to their work. I realized that some of you used the student VISA as a pretext to get a VISA and to go abroad. That some of you came here without financial coverage (thus also lying to the immigration office). That some of you spend more time working rather than studying; some others attend academies (just because in some cases this provides a small salary or in the hope that this certificate can boost their CV - which is not always the case) or work in an abusive way to mantain themselves and try to pass an exam now and again and doesn't matter with which grade, in order to maintain their student VISA. While working can be admirable in some cases, it cannot in any way affect the time you devote to study for your exam. If working takes time, well, do what I did when I had you age, I worked as a fisherman during the day and at night I slept very little in order to study. Some of you have arrived completely unprepared to the exams, some of you tried the exams many times hoping that - out of patience- the professor will finally give them an 18. THIS IS A WRONG ATTITUDE WHICH DOES NOT PAY OFF. Even 18/30 in UNINA means something, means that you have at least understood the basics of a topic.We professors all agreed to contrast with all our strength this behaviours. Some of you also think that they can just hand in a program taken off the shelf to pass an exam. Again: this does not work. Examinations have an oral (theoretical) part and in some cases also the discussion of the project. From now on, failing the oral (theoretical part)will mean that the project will not even be considered and that you must take the exam again. Furthermore group projects are group projects and everyone must give an equal contribution. To correct these wrong behaviors we are studying some penalizing measures. In any case, the professors have agreed not to concede anything to people who come completely unprepared to the exams. If they must repeat the exams 100 times before passing it, it is fine for us. There will be also restrictions on the access to internships and stages which will prevent students with more than two exams to be completed and with grades below a threshold (to be decided in the next Council) to apply for internships. You came here to study, not to work! What you will learn at the end of your master will be your viaticum for your future life and will also reflect on the reputation of our university This is the agreement you signed when receiving a VISA. If you work - this is your decision and we respect it - BUT and I repeat BUT, it MUST NOT IN ANY WAY PENALIZE YOUR STUDIES: I am sure that what I wrote will appear obvious to the vast majority of you. The small minority should think about it and eventually give up. There are no shortcuts.
