A forty year old female patient presented with left forearm pain, and pain on her left ring finger that is relieved when elevating her arm of one month duration. She had no notable findings on physical examination.
Diagnosis - Cervical discogenic radiculopathy
Management - Keyhole foraminotomy (C6/7, left side)
Currently she is recovering well, with subjective improvement of pain in her left arm.
Keyhole foraminotomy is a surgical procedure performed to relieve nerve compression in the spine. It is commonly used to treat conditions such as foraminal stenosis, herniated discs, bone spurs, or other conditions that cause nerve compression in the spine, particularly in the neural foramen.
The surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, and the surgeon makes a small incision and removes/trims the bone or tissue that is compressing the nerve, thereby creating more space for the nerve to pass through. This approach aims to minimize post-operative pain, scarring, and recovery time.
Regular follow-up visits with the surgeon are important to monitor the healing process. Physical therapy or rehabilitation may be recommended to aid in the recovery.
