На рассвете 18 мая 1703 года, пользуясь плохой погодой, флотилия из 30 шлюпок скрытно подошла к шведским кораблям Astrild и Gedan, стоявшим у крепости Ниеншанц.
В последний момент шведские корабли открыли орудийный огонь. Солдаты Преображенского и Семеновского полков провели успешный абордаж. Противник был вынужден спустить флаги, а корабли — стали трофеем русского флота.
