🔬National Science Day, February 28:

• National Science Day marks the discovery of the Raman effect by physicist C.V. Raman on February 28 in 1928.

• The first National Science Day was celebrated in 1968 when the government decided to commemorate the announcement of the discovery of the Raman effect and to encourage the development of a scientific mindset in the country.

• C.V. Raman became deeply engaged with the study of light scattering, conducting numerous experiments to observe how light behaved while it passed through different substances.

• This research led to his discovery of what is now known as the Raman effect on February 28, 1928.

• For this, he was knighted in 1929.

• In 1930, he became the first Asian to win a Nobel Prize for Physics.

What is the Raman effect?

• The Raman effect refers to the inelastic scattering of light by matter, resulting in a shift in the frequency of the scattered light.

• In simpler words, it is a change in the wavelength of light that occurs when a light beam is deflected by molecules.

• The Raman effect forms the basis for Raman spectroscopy, which is used by chemists and physicists to gain information about materials.

🌿 Ayurveda Day, September 23:

• Government of India has officially designated 23rd September as the date for celebrating Ayurveda Day each year.

• This change, notified through a Gazette Notification dated 23rd March 2025, marks a significant shift from the earlier practice of observing Ayurveda Day on Dhanteras, which follows a variable lunar calendar.

• The chosen date, 23rd September, coincides with the autumnal equinox, a day when day and night are nearly equal. This astronomical event symbolizes balance in nature, perfectly aligning with the Ayurvedic philosophy that emphasizes equilibrium between the mind, body, and spirit.
☀️ Sun Candle phenomenon:

• A sun candle which is also known as a sun pillar, is a rare atmospheric optical situation that takes place when ice crystals in the atmosphere reflect sunlight at just the right angle and result in forming a vertical column of light that appears to come from the sun. This effect is most commonly observed during sunrise or sunset when the sun is low on the horizon.
