كلمة شغف مُشتقَّة من شغافة، أي جاءت من كلمة شغاف القلب وتعني غشاؤه، وهي المرحلة الثالثة من مراحل الحُب السبعة، وفي تحليل مرحلة الشغف، تكون هذه المرحلة عندما يبدأ الحُب بملامسة غشاء القلب، أي تعمَّق فيه، ويُعتبر كل شغف في شيء حُباً له، ولكن لا يُمكن اعتبار كل حُب شغف.
