Lesson 5 - Living in a country where you have to speak a foreign language can cause serious social and practical problems ⤵️
Some people associate living abroad and having to speak a new language with particular severe social and practical problems. While I do acknowledge that fact that migrants can face certain difficulties, I believe some people adapt better than others, meaning I only partly agree with the given view.
On the one hand, it is true that some migrants can experience serious problems when having to live in a new country and speak a foreign language. Firstly, due to a lack of linguistic proficiency, migrants may face language barriers, which can make the process of adaptation more challenging. Secondly, living far from home can be a frustrating experience because of marginalization and alienation. In other words, migrants can often be victims of racism and nationalism, and if they fail to integrate smoothly, the feeling of isolation is inevitable.
On the other hand, it appears that not all people moving abroad face serious social and practical difficulties. The reason for this is simple. Numerous major cities of the world now have many diasporas where people maintain their culture of origin, and help others adapt faster. One such example is the Uzbek Diaspora in New York City. The streets of Brooklyn are home to many Uzbek people who built a community where they enjoy speaking their own language, eating national Uzbek meals and establishing family businesses. A similar example can be made about a Chinatown, a district that is home to Chinese migrants in many cities of the world. The point is that migrants living in such areas may have to speak the local language, English in the given case, but it does not necessarily make their lives much more difficult.
In conclusion, not every migrant’s experience in a foreign country is full of endless social challenges. The process of integration may be much easier than people expect as explained through examples above.
