在美国的银行开户一般都会开立一个checking account支票账户，用于日常收支，这个支票账户没有利息。
为什么银行要提供独立的支票和储蓄账户呢？银行声称这是为了满足消费者的需求：客户希望有一个与主要交易账户分开的地方存放他们的储蓄。然而真正的原因是，这种区分使银行可以对支票账户中的数十亿美元支付零利息。
由于目前利率高，有闲散资金的人可以从一个普通的高收益储蓄账户获得超过4%的利息，可是很少有人利用这个机会。根据Bankrate上个月的调查，只有7%拥有短期储蓄的美国人能够赚到这部分利息。
