خوف عبارت است از ترسیدن به امری که هنوز واقع نشده و وقوع آن مترقّب و مورد اشمئزاز و ناراحتی انسان است. و حزن عبارت است از اندوه و غم نسبت به امر غیرملایم و ناپسندی که واقع شده است. این دو معنی بر سالک إلی الله راه ندارد!!! زیرا سالک کار خود را با خدای خود یکسره نموده غیر از خدا مقصد و مقصودی ندارد، نه از فوت امر غیر منتظره‌ای در حزن، و نه از وقوع امر غیر مترقّبی در خوف خواهد بود.
