1993-yilda BMT Bosh Assambleyasida 3-may sanasini “Xalqaro matbuot erkinligi kuni” deb eʼlon qilish va shu kunda Xalqaro matbuot erkinligi kuni nishonlanishi haqida maxsus rezolyutsiya qabul qilingan.
Oʻshandan buyon har yili 3-may kuni dunyo boʻylab Xalqaro matbuot erkinligi kuni sifatida nishonlanadi.
Har yili shu kun munosabati bilan BMT dunyo davlatlaridagi matbuot erkinligi hisobotini eʼlon qiladi.
YUNESKO esa shu kunda dunyo jurnalistlari orasidan oʻzining dolzarb maqolalari bilan matbuotda chiqish qilgan bir nafar jurnalistni maxsus mukofot bilan taqdirlaydi. Mukofot jamgʻarmasi 25 ming AQSH dollaridan iborat. Bu mukofot 1997-yilda, kolumbiyalik jurnalist Gilyermo Kano oʻldirilishi ortidan joriy qilingan.
