On the 23rd of March, Hongkongers around the world protested against Article 23. Hongkongers in Leeds, in response to the call, took to the streets in cold and windy weather to express our fury and dissent against Article 23.

Many locals approached us and wanted to know what had happened in Hong Kong. One lady who has lived in Hong Kong even hugged one of us to show her support.

The Chief Executive of Hong Kong said that most people support the Article 23 legislation. They silence all opposition voices and pretend they have public support. We are here to say ‘No’ to them. We will fight till our last breath. Liberate Hong Kong. Revolution of Our Times.

Transcript: Recently, a series of abnormal events has swept through Hong Kong, reaching a point where their occurrence has become somewhat routine: the cessation of liberal studies, the enforcement of the National Security Law, the imposition of “loyalty” assessments for candidacy in elections, and the closure of news outlets. As we witness our losses, we're left questioning: “what, indeed, remains?”

Ensnared within the reality of limitations and oppression, adorned with thorns, roads often necessitate navigating these intricately woven, prickly obstacles. We not only need to find an exit along the narrow passage but also toil tirelessly to open it, in order to claim the dawn that is rightfully ours—whether returning home, fleeing, or reclaiming lost ground.

Artist Introduction✍🏻 :

// Jade (@jadepearls_) is an up-and-coming young artist currently studying art in the UK. This is her first exhibition presenting new political work at the Leeds City Museum.

Originally from Hong Kong, Jade draws much of her surrealistic style from her experiences growing up in the bustling city. She seeks to capture fleeting yet profoundly impactful everyday moments through her emotive pieces. Whether recording political demonstrations or quiet scenes of daily life, Jade finds beauty in normalcy and transform the mundane into something transcendent.

Jade's technical skills continue to evolve during her university studies, but she maintains a consistent focus on conveying emotion and capturing life's special details through sometimes fantastical interpretations. For Jade, art is about spotlighting ordinary people and events and seeing the extraordinary within them. She finds inspiration everywhere from family dinners to protest marches if one looks closely enough. This debut show promises to shine new light on Jade's singular vision and establish her as an artist to watch in the future. //

Artist Introduction✍🏻 :

//Born into working-class families, Lumli Lumlong @lumlilumlong_ studied fine art together in France for 5 years with very limited financial means. Most of their artworks, which have been exhibited and collected by individuals in Hong Kong, London, Paris, Berlin, Prague, Dublin, Sydney, New York, Geneva, Slovenia, Glasgow and Brussels, are mostly oil paintings in a grotesque style with a shared aim, revealing social realities. They have published their collection of artworks entitled “Liberation of Art” and “The Hong Kong Metamorphosis”. Under the rule of China, they were repeatedly accused by the pro-Chinese Communist Party media of allegedly violating the National Security Law and using art to promote Hong Kong independence. “Liberation of Art” was then listed as a banned book. In 2021, they fled Hong Kong to the UK.

In addition to their artistic creations, they spent fifteen years teaching painting. They established their own art studio, teaching mainstream students, students with autism, sponsored students and rehabilitated youths and more. They were lecturers of oil-painting at the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong.

According to Lumli Lumlong, social reality can be more “terrifying” than their artistic creations and compassion is the ultimate expression of one’s imagination.
