في المسألة بين أهل العلم اتفاق واختلاف، أما اتفاقهم فهو في كونه لا يخلد في النار، واختلافهم في دخوله تحت المشيئة فيه قولان، ذكر شيخ الاسلام ابن تيمية أنه لا يغفر ولا يدخل تحت المشيئة وقد جنح إلى هذا القول بعض أئمة الدعوة كالشيخ محمد بن عبد الوهاب وحسن صديق خان مفتي الديار وابن قاسم في الحاشية وحمود بن عقلاء الشعيبي وسليمان بن عبد الله واستدلوا بعموم قوله تعالى: {إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَنْ يُشْرَكَ بِهِ} فأن وما دخلت عليه في تأويل مصدر فتكون نكرة في سياق نفي، فتعم بذلك عدم مغفرة سائر أنواع الإشراك. والقول الثاني بأنه داخل تحت المشيئة ذكره ابن العربي وبعض علماء الدعوة والحكمي، وهو ظاهر كلام ابن القيم في إغاثة اللهفان.
