الإصرار على المعاصي يجعل منها صفة راسخة في النفس، ومن ثم يصعب الإقلاع منها وإصلاحها، وقد قيل في مثل من يؤخر التوبة: كرجل حاول قلع شجرة فوجدها قوية، فقال أؤخرها سنة ثم أعود، فكلما بقيت ازدادت رسوخًا، وكلما طال عمره ازداد ضعفه.
