جاء في حديث معاذ ذكر أوّلُ ثلاثةِ أركان الإسلام دون ذكر الصوم والحج: فقال بعض أهل العلم هذه التي ذكرت هي الأمور المنصوص على القتال عليها، قال تعالى: ﴿فَإِن تابوا وَأَقامُوا الصَّلاةَ وَآتَوُا الزَّكاةَ فَخَلّوا سَبيلَهُم﴾ الآية [التوبة: ٥]، أما الصوم فيجوز أن يظهره الإنسان وهو كاذب، والحج فيجب مرة واحدة على المستطيع. قال الشيخ ابن باز رحمه الله في حاشيته: "هذا في مقام الدعوة إلى الإسلام فإنه يُكتفى في الغالب بذكر هذه الثلاثة، فإذا أذعن المدعو للإسلام والصلاة والزكاة فمن باب أولى أن يذعن لغيرها من العبادات، أما في مقام تبيين الدين والإسلام لابد من الإتيان بأركان الإسلام الخمسة".
