غيرَ أنّه عزَّ وجل صانني، وعلّمني، ثمّ عاد فغمسني في التقصير والتفريط حتى رأيتُ أقلَّ الناس خيرًا منّي. وتارةً يوقظني لقيام الليل ولذّة مناجاته، وتارةً يحرمني ذلك مع سلامة بدني، ولولا بِشارة العلم بأنَّ هذا نوع تهذيبٍ وتأديبٍ لخرجت إمّا إلى العُجب عند العمل، وإمّا إلى اليأس عند البطالة؛ لكن رجائي في فضلهِ قد عادلَ خوفي منه.
وقد يغلبُ الرجاء بقوّة أسبابه؛ لأنّي رأيتُ أنّهُ قد ربّاني منذ كنت طفلًا، فإنَّ أبي مات وأنا لا أعقل، والأم لم تلتفت إلي؛ فرَكُزَ في طبعي حُبُّ العلم. وما زال يوقعني على المُهمّ فالمُهم، ويحملني إلى مَنْ يحملني على الأصوب، حتى قَوّم أمري. وكم قد قصدني عدوٌ فصدّه عني، وإذ رأيتهُ قد نصرني وبصرني ودافع عنّي ووَهَبَ لي، قوّىٰ رجائي في المستقبل بما قد رأيت في الماضي. .
