哥伦比亚大学开始对示威学生进行停学处理后，一批学生占领哈密尔顿大楼，校方声称将开除占领大楼的学生。在历史上哈密尔顿大楼多次被示威学生占领。1968年反战学生占领该楼一周，校方叫来警察清场，抓捕700多名学生、打伤100多名学生，但学校答应了示威学生的所有诉求，包括停止与军方合作、取消在哈莱姆的公园建体育馆、赦免所有示威学生、校长和教务长辞职。1985年学生占领该大楼三周，校方答应学生诉求，剥离对南非的投资。这些都成为学校光荣历史的一部分。
